The "What are you playing?" Thread

Trying to inject some adrenaline into the barely beating heart of these forums (Pulp Fiction suddenly comes to mind) by making a new thread. I like to think that the one thing we all have in common is we play games. I don't even know what systems everyone owns right now, but it's a safe bet that most of us have xboxes, and at least a few of you use Steam and we all have a PC at least.

So what are you playing lately? Update as often as you can/want...please! This place is neglected. I know Brian is in Africa and Ameer is in school and Jav has a new job and we are all pretty damn busy lately. But let's try to find a few minutes a day for this place when possible and breathe some new life into it.

I've been picking at Crysis 2 since last night. It looks freakin' amazing and they weren't kidding about it being perhaps the prettiest game ever. It looks amazing on PS3 so I imagine it looks even better on the 360. I find that Black Ops is the nicest looking, even better than MW3...but Crysis on 360 would probably give it a run for its money. Super fun tactical FPS gameplay, too. Nothing more fun than using your super suit thing to cloak yourself, amble over behind an enemy soldier and stealth kill him. Or pulling off headshots from afar while cloaked and watching as the rest of the crew scratch their heads as their comrades drop dead around them. Awesome game.

Rayman Origins when I need to chill out from killing.

Still haven't popped in MGS4 or Uncharted.

So what are YOU playing?

My Drug Problem

Hey everyone. The title of the thread pretty much explains my long absence. I had been back on dope since I started at the grocery store a year ago. Hero doses of codeine for awhile, about 1200mg/day and then graduated back to Oxycontin and Dilaudid. I checked myself into detox 2 weeks ago with a 1200mg/day codeine habit, a 160mg/day oxy habit and a 30mg/day dilaudid habit. Therapeutic doses for opioid tolerant persons are: codeine 30-60mg, oxycodone 5-10mg, and hydromorphone (dilaudid) 1-4mg. So my habit was fucking out of control and even with them giving me max methadone in detox (100mg daily) it barely budged my withdrawal symptoms which I had to sweat through. I got stabilized on a taper of 50mg methadone and walked out the door when that stopped giving me any kick at all.

I came home and stayed with my mother for a bit and sweated out the last of the hardcore opiates and started to withdraw from the methadone (worst/longest of all the opiates)At this time I phoned a few methadone docs and got on the waiting list. I found out that one of the prescribes Suboxone, which is a new "miracle drug" for opiate addiction. Basically when I take it, I feel not sick anymore because it's an opiate, but it also has something in it that blocks all other opiates...so if I were to try to get high on something else like oxy it would be like taking sugar pills (100 dollar sugar pills...). This seems to be the answer for me. I'm on EI now waiting to see the doctor.

Anyways, that's where I've been. Commence calling me an idiot...if there's anyone still around here. Someone should add a tumbleweed graphic to the banner or something.

Nice to see you guys again.

Maybe I should actually buy a legitimate copy of Windows?

(To skip the story, scroll down to the TL;DR part)

Ugh. I don't know why all of a sudden I can't get my pirated copy of Windows 7 to crack right. Or at all.

Okay, so obviously I'm a Mac user. You all know that. So obviously Windows doesn't just come with my computer. I have to acquire it myself and install it myself.

I downloaded an ISO a long time ago of an official Windows 7 and have installed and cracked it NUMEROUS times with no problem using the Hazar cracks that came with it. No big deal. Worked fine.

I installed ONCE in BootCamp back a year ago or so. No problems. But the last few I've just installed in Parallels as a Virtual Machine. No problems. I have a Parallels Windows 7 VM that I've had for a while now that works great. I have everything installed. Steam so I can play my Windows only games. It's really the only reason I need Windows at all. Games.

But now all of a sudden today I am shit out of luck...

I am on a MacBook Air, so I don't have a DVD drive, but I bought a USB stick today and successfully created the Bootable install disk from my ISO and successfully installed Windows 7 about LITERALLY 6 times tonight since I got home at 7PM. But every time it went the same way...

Install Windows completely. Set it up including the Serial Number (Fucking hate that. 25 random characters that take forever to type in. God dammit, Microsoft. Have hated serial keys since the 98 days when I used Windows all the time and had to reinstall many times.) and boot up. Install the Apple drivers to make Windows work well with my Mac. Boom. All works fine. Everything is fine up until now except the one thing. "Product not activated." And my network is password protected so Windows can't just talk to MS to verify the serial number. All well and good. So I do the same thing I've done numerous times with no problem. I double-click the Crack, click the buttons and let it do its thing.

Now what's SUPPOSED to happen is the activation server is rendered inoperable and Windows thinks it's activated. Free Windows for me!

But what has happened every single time tonight? It renders it UNBOOTABLE. Every single time. Unbootable. Black screen, flashing cursor for 5 seconds, restart. Black screen and cursor, restart. Black screen, you get the idea. Unbootable. No explanation either.

So now I have a dilemma. Either: (TL;DR)

I suck it up and actually purchase Windows. Edited: It looks like Home Premium would be good enough for me. Looking at Wikipedia, Premium and Pro have features I would never even use. So Home Premium would be great. It's $200. I can buy from MS, download the ISO and put it on my USB stick. I've decided I can spare $200 for the ability to play my Windows games at full speed and legitimately.

Or I find a working crack. I have scoured the interwebs and all I find is broken links and links to what I already have. I don't know why they don't work anymore. I can't tell if it's the machine or the program. It doesn't tell me. It doesn't give me an error. And it doesn't let me boot into Safe Mode or anything. So it's just broken.

Another option, but I don't know exactly what to do, is reinstall Windows vanilla again with all the Apple drivers and somehow copy the right properly cracked DLL's or files from my working Virtual Machine installation to the BootCamp one. Is this an option? It must be. I bet it's a single file or something. Anyone have any ideas? I'd really like to go with this option if possible. I just don't know what files to look for. Like which files are patched when Windows is cracked.

So, suggestions? Ideas? Buy, Crack or Hack? I only need Windows for exclusive games.

So, is anyone else growing a Novembeard?

I progressively shaved for Halloween costumes, so I had a handlebar mustache to start the weekend, and ended Monday night with a classic 'stache. On the 1st of November I shaved the rest of it to start the month fresh, so right now I'm just kind of stubbly.

I decided my ruleset for this year is that shaping is allowed but no trimming, so I can shave away my neard, but I can't take any length off. I'm pretty interested to see how long it could get in a month. I'll probably take some pictures as it progresses, so I'll try to post them here.

If any of y'all are growing a beard, you should share some photos

What Console Did You Grow Up On?

Sorry this got tl;dr, but I'm bored and this place is the usual flatline...

Pretty standard, but we have a rather wide age range around here and there is also always the divide in us younger generations with sega/nintendo and the like. It would be interesting to me to see what everyone else remembers playing first. Also include other personal taste information like the first console you remember loving and not just playing. Which companies did you "follow," if any? Were you a Nintendo kid or a Sega kid? When Sony/MS entered the picture, where did you branch off to? I guess including your entire console history wouldn't be too much to ask or remember for most of us here.

Pretty interesting question I think. Get to it!

Me, pretty atypical "progression." Kids who were born after the mid-late eighties basically have a niche console like Nintendo to "progress" from and usually we end up where we are now with the "cool kid" systems. I'm also sure some of you totally didn't follow this path. What happened with me was, being born in 88, Atari was long dead and Nintendo had hit the scene big time already. But from age 3-5 I exclusively played Atari 2600 games because it was my dad's favorite console at the time and even being as dated as it was, it was still a go-to system for the older or more "hardcore crowd. I don't really remember being particularly good at any of the games. I enjoyed Space Invaders, Centipede, Pitfall, Donkey Kong, and the original Mario Bros. I remember. Now at 23 I am finally getting back into these titles, being actually able to rack up half-decent scores and enjoy trying to beat my own records, as meager as they are.

Then from 5-6 I played the NES like a boss because my old man finally broke the 2600 and moved up to the already old NES. He liked Mario, Tetris and Contra. I remember fucking LOVING Contra but sucking at it and always stealing my old man's extra lives in order to keep playing...but I wasn't too bad and we had a blast. It was one of the few bonding experiences I remember having with him as a child...as his personality is just as robotic as the spaceships we shot down in Contra...after the obligatory 30 life Konami code (copied from a magazine in the 90's chilluns!).

No SNES for me until way late in life. Went straight to Sega Genesis because the console buying in my house was still my father's doing and according mainly to his tastes. I remember having a blast with Sonic and stuff, but ultimately having way more fun playing SNES as friend's houses. I mean, come on.

Then my friend got an N64 and I basically started living at his house to play it. We spent 3 or 4 summers of beautiful days holed up pasty and malnourished inside the house, our hands blue, greasy and gripping our 3 pronged controllers. Eventually I got my own. Then my friend added a PS1 to the mix, and I did as well. Played more 64 than anything, though. PS1 was played basically when the PS2 came out and I didn't have near enough money for one.

From this to, of all things, my beloved Dreamcast! I loved and still love that thing with ever fiber of my being. Had more fun with that than my 3 or 4 PS2s later.

From this to Xbox, as if the progression weren't already fucked. Funny, huh? But I bought it at launch because I was obsessed with Xbox from the announcement of it. It just looked cool, geared towards my age at the time, and since everyone else was most assuredly getting their late late PS2s that year, I drooled over the Xbox graphics and saved up for it. Along with begging my parents to chip in on it. It ended up being my one and only xmas present...bought early. My uncle from the states sent me Halo in the mail for xmas, and I was off on the Xbox for 2 years before I got a PS2.

Got the PS2 for Vice City, nuff said. Then got a Gamecube because I could. Didn't like it much, so I sold the PS2 and GC to buy my first mac, the beloved eMac!

Then 360, then Wii, and here I am.

PHEW TL;DR I'm sorry. Turned into a book.

Fuck you, Mr. Stinkbug

http://tumblr.com/ZunTdxBWoEku

So I’m sitting here watching Conan in NYC when I hear a faint buzz followed by a landing. Looking around I notice a familiar friend over on the wall under the lights. “Hello there, Mr. Stinkbug” I said and thought to myself, I will take a photograph and post it on the Tumblr so my FaceBook friends can have a laugh. Since I haven’t really used my 12MP camera for photos in forever, I looked at my iPad, and over at my iPod touch to decide what I should take the picture with. I chose my iPod touch.

I picked it up, opened the camera app and started to focus on the stinkbug on the wall when I noticed it was looking at me. It was actually looking at me. In a flash it leaped off the wall and landed on my hand.

Now, at the very moment it landed on my hand my instincts kicked in. I flailed my hands trying to knock it off because Eww! Eww! Eww! Stinkbug on my hand! Get it off!!!!

It landed on the floor on its back and took a few seconds to flip itself over like a turtle, or shiny metal robot lying slightly off center. And it took me a few seconds to come to a painful conclusion…

I looked down at my iPod touch, which was lying face down on the concrete floor and replayed the whole thing in my head recalling every detail, including the sound of glass hitting solid processed stone.

“Oooh… boy…”

I picked it up and flipped it over. Totally smashed. The screen was totally shattered, but still stuck to the LCD, and it was still on. It landed perfectly flat on the ground. Not the corner, which might have protected it, but right smack flat on the floor. Apple knows how to make a solid product. Almost indestructible. I had to laugh. I took the above photo with my 12MP digital camera.

I bought this iPod last year, just over a year ago right before Halloween when I dropped my previous iPod touch while taking it out of my pocket. I sold that one for $25 to a friend and promptly went to the store and bought this one. I bought a $15 case later on but removed it because it wouldn’t stay on because of when I dropped it on a corner and pushed in the casing. And I removed the screen cover, which would have prevented this accident, because the adhesive was peeling off and it was bubbling.

The Stinkbug is standing on the floor where he landed laughing at my misfortune. Fuck you, Mr. Stinkbug.

I am so glad I chose the iPod and not the iPad.
