Re: Apple iPad
Not a lot of people watch Mad TV but Apple really didn't do their homework on the name. Epic fail... The specs are also so underwhelming, no camera, and I can't see who besides apple fanboys would actually own one. I think just taking one out would look quite douchey.

Re: Apple iPad
Hahaha that is hilarious!
Apple iFailure, Appropriately, I was thinking about this on the shitter (it was a bad one too), and I'm clueless how they think it's revolutionary (of course they had to say that, to build the hype). It's a big ipod, period. There's nothing special or different about it, it's just larger. I bet people are thrilled about wanting to spend $500 on another round of docks for their home.
Everything they said wasa absurd. Like I'm going to use it as my digital photo frame, pick it up and dock into the kitchen to cook dinner, then take it into my room as an alarm clock. This reminds me of the nokia gaming taco they had. I want to see someone put the iPad up to their ear like it's a big iphone.
Re: Apple iPad
Dude... The AppleTV rocks because I can set it on top of my Xbox 360, and then it can do the same thing my Xbox 360 does, all I have to do is switch inputs...

Yeah, pretty useless device.
So basically, it's bigger than my iPhone, yet has half as many features... Why don't I just put my iPhone under a magnifying glass.
Re: Apple iPad
Yeah and the 3GS is almost as fast as the iPad, with more memory and features and it's cheaper...In Jasoco's defense though, he hasn't "endorsed" this product yet so we shouldn't be so quick to assume he would.
Plus, this new "tablet" is less like a computer and more like a giant iPod touch, which is anything but a computer. The iPad will never be considered anything more than a novelty item unless Apple allows multitasking and Flash support, and for fucks sake a better interface. The iPhone interface works on a small screen, blowing it up to 10 inches makes it look retarded.
The funny thing is most Apple fanboys are bashing this thing, and that says something.

Re: Apple iPad
What cracks me up are the guys that are saying "flash sucks, HTML5 is the future" blah blah blah, if flash fucking sucks so bad, why is it on every website you fucking go to?
I don't care if it sucks, and if it drains power, point is, everyone uses it, so make it compatible.
That's like saying IE sucks, so we're not going to make it work with it. Well, you can do it, but unfortunately 98% of the internet uses it. So the 2% you're looking for, maybe 0.02% will find you.
Congrats, you just won 2 internet points.
Re: Apple iPad
Well, you proved a point, but still, it holds a pretty large portion.
And as far as corporations go, they generally don't tend to let their employees use anything other than Internet Explorer, because it's easier for the IT group to manage. For instance, at Alltel we couldn't even install applications on our PC's, everything we did was browser based.
If something messed up on a computer, it was re-imaged in a couple minutes and you went on your way.
Irrelevant, but it's whatever.
We also have 8" of snow on the ground in Arkansas, and it's still coming down really hard.
Re: Apple iPad
Ugly, pointless, epic fail. They could have at least made it an actual computer. What I've heard is that it's basically an iPod touch blown up. Whatever happened to that MacBook wheel they hyped last year?
Pathetic.
Re: Apple iPad
I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way. As far as I can tell, it's a glorified ebook reader. Otherwise, it seems like an inconvenience. If I want to listen to music I have more portable options. If I want to work, I have more powerful options. Just because it has a touch screen doesn't make it sexy.

Re: Apple iPad
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a failure. It's actually more well known than the AppleTV, and it's only a week old and hasn't even come out yet. I was in an Apple Store the other day and on the way out actually heard a customer asking if they had them yet. This thing will probably, in all likeliness, succeed more than you think.
I mean look at the iPod. 2001. It comes out and everyone says "What's the point?" Now look at it!
A thread from release day: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=500
"I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently! Why oh why would they do this?! It's so wrong! It's so stupid!"
"I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional."
"There are already two products similar to this on the market. The Nomad Jukebox and the Archos Jukebox which can come with a 20 gig HD. The iPod is obviously alot cooler and has firewire, but it is far from revolutionary. I for one am disappointed and think that apple is making a mistake by trying to get into this market."
Or the iPhone. Here's some amusing snippets from the media from 2007...
"I am pretty skeptical. I don’t think [iPhone] will meet the fantastic predictions I have been reading. For starters, while Apple basically established the market for portable music players, the phone market is already established, with a number of major brands. Can Apple remake the phone market in its image? Success is far from guaranteed." - Jack Gold, founder and principal analyst at J. Gold Associates, January 11, 2007
"iPhone which doesn't look, I mean to me, I'm looking at this thing and I think it's kind of trending against, you know, what's really going, what people are really liking on, in these phones nowadays, which are those little keypads. I mean, the Blackjack from Samsung, the Blackberry, obviously, you know kind of pushes this thing, the Palm, all these... And I guess some of these stocks went down on the Apple announcement, thinking that Apple could do no wrong, but I think Apple can do wrong and I think this is it." - John C. Dvorak, January 13, 2007
"The iPhone is nothing more than a luxury bauble that will appeal to a few gadget freaks. In terms of its impact on the industry, the iPhone is less relevant... Apple is unlikely to make much of an impact on this market... Apple will sell a few to its fans, but the iPhone won't make a long-term mark on the industry." - Matthew Lynn, Bloomberg, January 15, 2007
"[Apple's iPhone] is the most expensive phone in the world and it doesn't appeal to business customers because it doesn't have a keyboard which makes it not a very good email machine... So, I, I kinda look at that and I say, well, I like our strategy. I like it a lot." - Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, January 17, 2007
"The iPhone's willful disregard of the global handset market will come back to haunt Apple." - Tero Kuittinen, RealMoney.com, January 18, 2007
"I can’t believe the hype being given to iPhone... I just have to wonder who will want one of these things (other than the religious faithful)... So please mark this post and come back in two years to see the results of my prediction: I predict they will not sell anywhere near the 10M Jobs predicts for 2008." - Richard Sprague, Microsoft Senior Marketing Director, January 18, 2007
"Consumers are not used to paying another couple hundred bucks more just because Apple makes a cool product. Some fans will buy [iPhone], but for the rest of us it's a hard pill to swallow just to have the coolest thing." - Neil Strother, NPD Group analyst, January 22, 2007
"There's an old saying -- stick to your knitting -- and Apple is not a mobile phone manufacturer, that's not their knitting... I think people overreacted to it -- there was not a lot of tremendously new stuff if you think about it." - Greg Winn, Telstra's operations chief, February 15, 2007
"I'm more convinced than ever that, after an initial frenzy of publicity and sales to early adopters, iPhone sales will be unspectacular... iPhone may well become Apple's next Newton." - David Haskin, Computerworld, February 26, 2007
"Even if [the iPhone] is opened up to third parties, it is difficult to see how the installed base of iPhones can reach the level where it becomes a truly attractive service platform for operator and developer investment." - Tony Cripps, Ovum Service Manager for Mobile User Experience, March 14, 2007
"Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone... What Apple risks here is its reputation as a hot company that can do no wrong. If it's smart it will call the iPhone a 'reference design' and pass it to some suckers to build with someone else's marketing budget. Then it can wash its hands of any marketplace failures... Otherwise I'd advise people to cover their eyes. You are not going to like what you'll see." - John C. Dvorak, March 28, 2007
"The iPhone is going to be nothing more than a temporary novelty that will eventually wear off." - Gundeep Hora, CoolTechZone Editor-in-Chief, April 02, 2007
Motorola's then-Chairman and then-CEO Ed Zander said his company was ready for competition from Apple's iPhone, due out the following month. "How do you deal with that?" Zander was asked at the Software 2007 conference. Zander quickly retorted, "How do they deal with us?" - Ed Zander, May 10, 2007"What does the iPhone offer that other cell phones do not already offer, or will offer soon? The answer is not very much... Apple’s stated goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 seems ambitious." - Laura Goldman, LSG Capital, May 21, 2007
"[Apple should sell 7.9 million iPhones in 2008]... Apple's goal of selling 10 million iPhones this year is optimistic." - Toni Sacconaghi, Bernstein Research analyst, February 22, 2008
"Microsoft, with Windows Mobile/ActiveSync, Nokia with Intellisync, and Motorola with Good Technology have all fared poorly in the enterprise. We have no reason to expect otherwise from Apple." - Peter Misek, Canaccord Adams analyst, March 07, 2008
"We are not at all worried. We think we've got the one mobile platform you'll use for the rest of your life. [Apple] are not going to catch up." - Scott Rockfeld, Microsoft Mobile Communications Group Product Manager, April 01, 2008
"[iPhone] just doesn't matter anymore. There are now alternatives to the iPhone, which has been introduced everywhere else in the world. It's no longer a novelty." - Eamon Hoey, Hoey and Associates, April 30, 2008
I think it will carve itself a niche. And it will really help push a new paradigm in "couch computing" since 2010 seems to be the year everyone is releasing a tablet of some sort.

“One of the most prominent icons of modern day Christianity, the Crocoduck is capable of dispelling all arguments in favor of Atheism and Darwinism simply by not existing. Its sworn enemy is the platypus, which, in harsh contrast, is capable of proving god does not exist by existing.”
Re: Apple iPad
Thoughts on the point:
Yes this device is pointless... for you and me; but we aren't the target market. People like my grandma don't need to run multiple apps at once. She wants to check her email, follow a few websites, and play solitaire on her computer. My other grandma just bought a laptop for when she's traveling in her RV. How nice would this be, especially with 3G data? She could pay for data when she travels, and if she doesn't travel one month, she doesn't pay the internet bill. How about my dad, who has an old, shitty laptop so he can surf the internet on the couch? He'd love this.
Me on the other hand, I usually run 3 or more apps at once, one being a browser with about eight or more tabs open. In my case, I'd be limited by the iPad, but I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, so why do I care?
Thoughts on Flash
Yes, Flash is everywhere, but that doesn't make it good. IE was exactly the same, but we're seeing that change too. Having been both the producer and consumer of content on the web, I can see where a device not having Flash sucks, but I can also see why it's not going to matter in a few years. Back when Apple got rid of the floppy drive on the original iMac, there was a shitstorm. Why? Because floppy disks were the best way to share data. What about now? When is the last time you used a floppy disk? We can all agree that now we have better technologies. In terms of online video, there are better things on the horizon.
You can argue that Apple jumps the gun on cutting off technology, but I'd rather technology be pushed to evolve (even if I can't afford to upgrade to it now) than see it stagnate, and let's be honest: There was no doubt that the Apple tablet wouldn't have Flash. The iPhone didn't and we've lived these years it's been around.
Anyways, I have a feeling that eventually the iPad is going to start looking pretty awesome, but it's not going to start looking like your computer— and that's the point
(Working as an Apple-ish tech, I've had to talk about this A LOT, to both coworkers and customers, so I've had a chance to form some thoughts, as you can see
)

Re: Apple iPad
The problem with not supporting Flash is this. Apple states that it is power hungry, may slow down the system, blah blah blah.
Okay, that's fine. So does playing a 3D game.
If I want to turn the Flash off, how about an option for it? If I decide to browse with Flash, I know it's going to kill the battery, but so what.
There's nothing wrong with pushing technology, and while all of us fully understand that we're not seeing Flash on purpose, I have plenty of people with iPhones that are always asking why things are missing on the websites they go to. They don't understand why it's just not there.
A couple of years is a very long time to wait for developing technology, on something you're releasing now. It'd be like Ford producing a sports car that is going to be super fast, but right now you can only buy the car with a four cylinder, come back in a couple years, and we'll upgrade you to the V8 then.
That's how most people see this. With the iPhone it hasn't been so bad for the most part, because almost all YouTube videos were converted over to be able to be played on the iPhone. Problem is, most people still watch YouTube on their computers, which all support Flash.
I had a Motorola Q a couple years ago, and while overall it was a pretty horrible experience, I could browse on over to YouTube with it and watch all the Flash videos I wanted, and they played pretty damn well. Now, did it kill my battery life, bog down the phone, and usually end up with me restarting it, yes, it did.
However, the iPhone is a hell of a lot more powerful than the Q was, and by not allowing multitasking, it's not going to be a Windows Mobile 5 experience where instead of just having the browser open, you have seven other things running in the background.
Re: Apple iPad
The problem with not supporting Flash is this. Apple states that it is power hungry, may slow down the system, blah blah blah.
You missed the important half though. Flash can screw things up and Apple can't do shit about it. It's something that's core to the experience (ie. you don't install it yourself) so it reflects back on Apple, not some developer of a 3D game, and it'd be the only thing shipping on the iPhone that they have absolutely no access to the code. They'd have to put in the work to get something up and running that doesn't provide a good experience. I mean, they had to rewrite the whole way that Safari handles plug-ins, just for Flash—I don't think they like it very much.
I'm not going to argue that Flash is important to the internet now, because it obviously is, but in the end, it's not going to provide the best experience, and of course Apple has no problem dropping technologies it's decided aren't necessary, etc.
And you can't argue that Adobe could do a better job of getting off it's ass and doing something new, instead of stretching the same old shit out.

Re: Apple iPad
I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT'S LIKE ME YELLING AT YOU AND NOT BEING ABLE TO UNDERSTAND ANYTHING YOU'RE SAYING BECAUSE YOU'RE WRONG AND I'M RIGHT AND I WANT FLASH AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF APPLE AND ADOBE CAN'T GET THEIR FUCK ON I STILL WANT FLASH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU.
I kid, I kid.
Re: Apple iPad
Alex I'm no internet expert but I do notice that almost all sites have some sort of flash component on their home page (this is increasing) as well as almost all video sites using flash. Is there some new tech on the horizon that I should be aware of? I think Apple is just being stubborn in this matter. The "best way to surf the web" as Apple describes the iPad should be able to see the whole damn web, period.

Re: Apple iPad
Re: Apple iPad
Flash is overrated these days and people only defend it because it's been around for so long. I have FlashBlocker installed and the only times I encounter it as part of the main site is on video sites. 98% of the time otherwise it's an advertisement. Apple has the right idea pushing Flash to the curb. It's old technology that was used in the olden days of HTML4 as a crutch to make cool things happen that web code couldn't do.
But with HTML5, the web can do cool shit right out of the box without Flash. As long as you don't use Internet Explorer because MS is so hell bent on pushing Silverlight (Which Apple has no qualms with and MS is porting for the iPhone OS and doesn't actually suck on OS X either.) and blatantly refuses to support all the cool stuff CSS3 and HTML5 can do.
These sites have some really cool things to play with if you use Chrome, Firefox 3.1+ or Safari and sometimes Opera:
http://www.chromeexperiments.com/
http://www.canvasdemos.com/
http://html5demos.com/
Some recommendations:
Wolfenstein style 3D engine: http://www.canvasdemos.com/2009/03/22/p
ng-part-2/
Cloth simuation: http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail
imulation/
Physics drawing simulation: http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail/physicsketch/
Google's home page... oops: http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail/gravity/
And this stuff can be done on the iPhone/iPod touch and now iPad because of WebKit's built-in HTML5 and CSS3 enhancements, as well as the stuff Apple uses for themselves to make web apps look as nice as regular apps on their touch devices.
What sites use Flash other than video sites? Most of the good Flash games get ported to iPhone OS anyway, and even Adobe's Flash authoring program has the ability to save Flash animations as iPhone apps for submission to the App Store. Flash on the internet is not as big a deal as people make it out to be.
Flash on OS X is a memory and resource hogging buggy piece of shit that causes most crashes in OS X. Literally. And Adobe, instead of getting their act together and fixing the problem, would rather defend themselves instead of doing some recoding. It's no wonder Apple wants to get that shit out of the way. It's terrible that a page with Flash pushes my CPU usage to nearly 100%. And it's no wonder that Chrome and now Safari have been designed to run Flash as separate threads so if Flash crashes, and it will, it won't take your browser down anymore.
Slowly the web will either move away from Flash, or offer alternatives (based on HTML5 and the VIDEO/AUDIO elements, JavaScript and CSS3) for people with iPhone OS devices. Because they have to. It's about time someone pushed the non-standard Flash (Flash is NOT a web standard, no matter what anyone thinks. It's just a plug-in that happens to take advantage of a standard page element and has been around for a long time.) to the side. Let's let the web itself shine again instead of being shadowed behind a plug-in designed as a crutch. Remember when everyone had a Flash navigation bar because no browser could do :hover effects? Now everyone can do it and no one uses Flash for that anymore. Now Videos can be embedded in pages standardly (As opposed to the old Embed/Object method) so there's really no need for Flash video players anymore. It'll just take a little time to get everyone on board. But the major people are there already.
Now, the VIDEO/AUDIO element's do have their problems. I'll admit that. Firefox is going with the open-source, but not quite sure if it's royalty-free or not OGG VORBIS while WebKit (Safari and Chrome) use H.264/AAC. Firefox won't use H.264 because of licenses. Apple won't use OGG/VORBIS because they don't know about any hidden license owners that might come out of the woodwork one day and say "Hey! You're using my codec! Pay me money!" So they go with a standard they know they can use. Firefox can't because they're an open-source community without the huge bank Apple has so they go with something that can be implemented without paying royalties... But that's not a big problem as long as you use both H.264/AAC and OGG/VORBIS formatted video or audio in your pages. OGG for Firefox, H.264 for Safari/Chrome. If done right, you can make your video player look and act exactly like Flash would...

There's nothing left that Flash can do that HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript can't anymore. Even 3D is possible right in the browser. I honestly see Flash becoming less and less used in the coming years.

I'm assuming that the iPad is coming out sooner than in the coming years. Right now, you need Flash to use/enjoy most websites.
What websites? You say "most". But the only times I see Flash used in my travels is for advertisements or video sites. Maybe NewGrounds and Flash games, but most of the good ones get ported to the iPhone anyway. And shit like FarmVille which you'd have to be a 13 year old girl, or most of my female 30 year old classmates to enjoy. I don't know about Mafia Wars. Is that Flash or JS? I don't use it but Kati does. If someone really wants Farmville or Mafia Wars on an iPad or iPod touch, they will make a FaceBook Connect enabled App for it.
Also, thanks Dpark. lol

Re: Apple iPad
Flash is everywhere. You can't deny it. You know what else is on the way out? Memory in portable devices that isn't solid state. But Apple still has the iPod Classic line. Why? Because people want tons of storage and don't mind the sluggishness and added weight of conventional hard drives. Realizing this, Apple keeps the device around, though the tech is on the way out.
The fact that my fucking phone which I know has the processing power to run flash and doesn't annoys me. The fact that Apple is advertising their new piece of crap product with the word "magical" (http://www.apple.com/) and it doesn't run Flash annoys me more.
Admit it Jason...Apple can make mistakes. I'm not even talking about Flash any more. I'm talking about the flawed product that is the iPad. It may not be marketed as a laptop replacement but basically that's what they're implying. But it doesn't surf the web better than a notebook or receive email better than a notebook because if one key thing: No physical keyboard. The keyboard adapter forces you to be sitting on some sort of table while using the device which defeats the purpose of having a portable tablet shaped device in the first place.
Also, the tablet design lends itself nicely to actually being used like a device to right on (think Newton). Apple had good handwriting recognition on that device even though it was a failure yet they don't implement it here. There are styluses that can be used with capacitive screens.
This device is the definition of a company half-assing a product. Was the hype unbelievably huge? Yes...it's Apple. But somewhere deep past all your blind fanboyism you have to see that this is a product that is not worth the purchase. Give me a scenario where it would be better fit than a macbook or an iphone.
I've been wrong about products before. Somewhere on this site is a post by me saying the Nintendo DS would fail. I was completely wrong. But here's a prediction: This product, outside of being purchased by douches that line up outside the Apple store, will fail. It's not revolutionary, it's not even evolutionary. I'm probably going to be wrong due to Apple's insane ability to market, but mark my words: I would never be caught dead using one. If I received one as a gift or won it, I would sell it. Why? I have a smart phone and a laptop.
I'm not really taking any shots at Alex because technically he does work for Apple.

Re: Apple iPad
Yeah, Apple can make mistakes. I'm not saying they don't. iPod Hi-Fi for one thing. Motorola ROKR. But I don't think the iPad is one of those things. They've done a lot of research and thinking to get the thing perfect. They wouldn't release it until it's done. And another thing that's not a mistake, the price is actually competitive for once.
And you keep saying Flash is everywhere. But you won't say where it is use that is not an advertisement or a video site! Games? Yes? What else? A lot of sites that used to use Flash for web apps have moved onto Web 2.0. I would like to see a list of sites you use that use Flash for any sort of productivity.

Re: Apple iPad

No, most sites aren't completely Flash-based, but nearly any time posts a video or song/audio clip, you have to have Flash to play it. Hell, all the videos we post on GeekPub would be unavailable to you on an iPad. And many use Flash for various elements of their sites: ESPN, Last.fm, CNET, etc.
Also, it is completely ridiculous that you keep dismissing video sites and game sites as part of the discussion.
I must also say that Dpark owns an iPhone, and I own an iPod and am using iTunes as we speak. I'm not an Apple hater. But Steve Jobs, as well as the rest of the company, can be overwhelmingly arrogant, and the iPad is an underwhelming, over-hyped product.

Usually it's for menu selections, but without it some sites are difficult to navigate.
Is it absolutely essential to browse the web? No. But without it I can't consider the browsing experience on the iPad any better than my laptop.
EDIT: My college site doesn't use flash but I've seen some that do.

Re: Apple iPad
I said Flash video doesn't count since it can and will be easily replaced with native HTML5 over time. (As more and more sites become available as mobile sites or app versions. As I've already seen a lot.) YouTube already has an app that launches when a YT video is embedded or linked. Hulu seems to be the straggler as they keep saying an app is coming but don't seem to make an effort.
And I do agree they can act arrogant. The success of the iPad however is still yet to be seen. It's only been known about for a week and a half and more people know the name iPad than know AppleTV. AppleTV is one of those, let's say "is it a flop or not?" devices because it still exists, people use it, but it isn't loved much and is still a niche. But when the AppleTV came out, Steve himself said it was just a silly little project they were working on. It wasn't as hyped as the iPad at all.
I think the iPad's ability to play all the thousands of apps the iPhone and iPod touch can unmodified will help its case though. And if 4.0 is done right, it could really help the thing take off. Will it succeed? Will it fail. You can't predict that as I have shown above with all the iPod and iPhone predictions. It's up to the public to decide and Apple to market it right. And I think its low starting price will help it a lot.

Re: Apple iPad
Silly Clark. I didn't mean perfect as in all amazing nothing wrong. I mean perfect as in "Apple perfect" as in "If it doesn't work the Apple way, we will not release it." Which is why they didn't just slap a multi-touch screen on a MacBook, cut off the keyboard and release that. Because a regular OS isn't really designed for the touch paradigm. It's designed for the mouse paradigm. A real touch interface needs to be built with touch in mind from the start. Not taken from an existing UI.

Re: Apple iPad
But without a proper push, it will never happen. See? Someone has to make the first move. It's like space colonies. If we don't get working on the technology required to live on the moon, it will never happen. And while it won't still happen for centuries, the longer you put it off, due to laziness or whatever, the longer it actually takes to happen. See also, hybrid/electric cars. What if the electric car had taken off in the 80's? Or Hybrid technology had been perfected sooner? We might all be driving much less fuel guzzling cars right now. We became too reliant on foreign oils, just like we became reliant on Flash.
Someone need to take the stand. Or else it never happens. Understand where I am going?

Re: Apple iPad
Was Flash so inherently flawed that all the sites that adopted it were just collectively moronic? Windows users don't seem to have issues with it.

Re: Apple iPad
I do however understand where you are coming from as far as pushing for something better but I agree with Clark that we are in the present and abandoning a technology to force a new one is silly.

It's the reason gas prices are so high. We didn't want to change 25 years ago, so now we're stuck waiting.
Living on the moon? Won't happen if everyone thinks "Well I won't be able to live there in my lifetime, so why bother?"
The digital switch is another example of doing it now to better the future. They put it off for years because people kept complaining that it was going to be an inconvenience. But they finally FINALLY pulled the trigger.
Humanity gets too used to things and just doesn't want to wait for better stuff. If it isn't available now, why bother? Right? I hate that line of thinking. At least some companies are willing to take the risks.

Re: Apple iPad
It's funny you mention taking risks when the iPad's OS is about the safest possible thing they could have done. But alas, enough arguing.
The forums being alive again is nice though...

Re: Apple iPad
It is. And yes, it is safe, but I still think it's a good thing to leave Flash off for many reasons. The major one being Adobe's ineptitude to create a non-sucky Mac program that is as good as their Windows counterparts.
Though in all reality, Apple could create their own Flash Player since Flash is open. Flash writers and players can be created by anyone license free. I'm kind of surprised some third party OS X app creator hasn't created a better Flash to replace the shitty Flash. But whatever.
I just hope Apple does not burn their bridge. They have a habit of becoming arrogant when it comes to their biggest supporters. Microsoft who creates Office and Adobe who creates Creative Suite. Fuck around too much and they could pull their respective plugs. But they don't, yet, because their apps do bring in money. But you sometimes wonder how thick the string is that keeps them anchored to the Mac platform.

Re: Apple iPad
I'm gonna step out of the way here and just say that when I watched the keynote on the iPad release with Jobs previewing the device I seriously laughed through the whole thing. He just looked so blindly proud of the iPad when he was using it but when he held it up for everyone to see and as he was pausing during his explanation of all the "revolutionary" things the iPad can do, you could almost see that he was sometimes at a loss for what to say and looked a little dissappointed at times.
His presentation of the stupid dog video and the NY Times on safari was truly hilarious. What a boring presentation. I don't understand the hype. I have no idea about any of this flash business but it's really an idea that I could have came up with. In fact, I would have scrapped the idea immediately in my mind after considering how it's A BIG GIANT IPOD TOUCH.
Re: Apple iPad
Apparently the people that license h.264, the codec that will probably replace flash, if things go well, have said that they will license it for free untill 2016 ( the current license period) for web use. Hopefully that will get Firefox to jump on the bandwagon of using it too (they support OGG).
That'd make Safari, Chrome and Firefox that support HTML 5 video, and IE as the only major browser that doesn't.
HTML 5 video honestly is the shit, so that's at least one reason I'm happy Apple is pushing for it over flash.

Re: Apple iPad
CheesyBread, you realize that Apple isn't the only, or even the first company to reveal a tablet like this so far this year. Right? Ballmer is hyped up over all the ones that run Windows 7 over on the PC side. This is the year of the tablet. Or at least the year we find out if people actually want a tablet or not. Did you laugh all the way through CES where every company that makes a computer revealed their plans for one of their own? (Weeks before Apple's keynote)

Re: Apple iPad
My name is Evan.
And please don't get me wrong. I'm a fanboy if there ever was one. I just think tablets are a bad idea all around...but as you pointed out earlier...that is irrelevant. No one thought the iPod or iPhone would take off and they are insanely popular. You may be right, the iPad could take off and become huge. The problem I have with it is that no matter what the other tablets do, if I were to buy one I would trust Apple to make the best. That doesn't matter, though. What I saw was a boring keynote. Every keynote I watched so far made me think that Steve Jobs was awesome and Apple was the best company ever...this one stood out as boring and that leads me to believe that I will think the iPad is boring if I own one because NOTHING dazzled me. Then again I'm not the target market for tablets.
But it was boring and very un-revolutionary was my point. I just think tablets are a failure to begin with.
Re: Apple iPad
I actually do kind of agree it wasn't as epic as I was hoping. It's a nice gadget and all, and I will probably get one at some point, but its future all depends on if people actually want tablets. Who knows, they might be the next big thing. The Couch Computer. Or they might go away. Who knows.
I was really hoping for an OS 4.0 preview (I thought they'd give a Tablet a new OS, not just a point update to the existing one.), iPhone on Verizon and new MacBook Pro speed bumps. People were sure this stuff was gonna happen too. But all we got was a tablet. Which is fine. But still. I really want new MacBook Pro's because they are coming, and they are coming soon, but now it probably won't be for another month or two.

What happened to the Macbook Wheel Jason? You'd know.

Re: Apple iPad
Heh, it worked well on me I guess.
Re: Apple iPad
Thanks, sweet guy singing into a mic and playing guitar avatar Clarky.
That guy is what I picture you as...the cool kid in a band that everyone likes and knows where to get weed and his brother let him use his ID in high school to buy everyone their booze.
THAT'S the Clark I know.
Re: Apple iPad
Speaking of which, I really miss getting to play guitar on stage. Anyone wanna start a band? I can do whatever, but my drumming is a bit lackluster.

Re: Apple iPad
My drumming is full of luster.
I can play the real drums like a pro but I'm having a lot of trouble with digidrummer trying to tap out insane beat with my thumbs. I keep tapping an imaginary foot pedal and expecting a sound to come out of the iPod.
Yeah, lets start a band. NO EMO!

Re: Apple iPad
I don't know any instruments but I could learn
or do vocals. I'm cool with destroying my voice box for chicks.

Re: Apple iPad
Jav destroys chick's boxes with his voice box.
I.E. he has found a new way to 3rd base.
...I totally sang her out last night. She loved it.
Re: Apple iPad
Me and Alex play guitar, Evan and Clark play drums. I could learn to play bass and I'm sure one of us could sing so we'd have something going. But we don't need two drummers so we'd have to figure something out.

Re: Apple iPad
The plan:
We cut off one of clark's arms to eat...then he covers my hi-hat while I play the rest of the drums. That leaves me with a free smoking arm and as long as we're all drunk it'll sound good.
When I hit the lotto I'll send you all a case of booze and some plane tickets.
I wish I didn't have to pay people to jam with me.

Re: Apple iPad
lol That's the beauty of jamming, it should always be free. And your plans with Clark deeply disturb me...
haha

Re: Apple iPad
I love drumming, and don't get me wrong, I'm not bad at it, I just have less experience on it than anything else.
I've done lead and rhythm electric guitar though, acoustic, piano, keyboard, bass, percussion (all the non-set stuff) mandolin, etc. Bass is actually a lot of fun, but I'd say lead electric is my personal favorite. Bass after that and keys after bass.

Re: Apple iPad
The Geeks would be a good name. Or The Nerds.
I guarantee you there are 50 bay area punk bands that already stole those names. Bands that don't even own IPODZZZ AND CUMPYOOTARZ!
Shame.
Re: Apple iPad
I call triangle.
Gamertag: Deduk
Re: Apple iPad
Geekpub would work.

Re: Apple iPad
But who will play the cowbell? And we definitely need a vibraslap. Hands down.

Re: Apple iPad
Nice.
I have 4 electric guitars which I don't know how to play lol.

Re: Apple iPad
I have 2 electric guitars that I can play. How did you acquire them?

Re: Apple iPad
I call bagpipes.
