Topic: Bought another gun!

This is a 1988 Model. It's a Browning Hi-Power 9mm. They retail new north of $1,000

Anyways, this is one of the longest used pistols for combat duty in the world, it's actually quite interesting if you'd like to read up on it. Here are some pictures, I'm picking it up on Saturday.

It also comes with four clips.

Can't wait.

Re: Bought another gun!

Beauty.  I'm thinking about getting a little 22 bolt-action repeater when I get on my own.  I had one back in the day and it was great for rabbits and partiridge and scaring little bastard kids off the front lawn.

Re: Bought another gun!

SUH-WEEEEET!

You wanna start an extremist rebel group?  You can be grand master of it as long as I get a pistol.  Glock will do nicely.

I had an unregistered .38 sub nose revolver before the cops took it.  It kicked like a muel and was super inaccurate at anything but point blank but damn it would blow a pumpkin apart for a little .38.

What scope are you using?  It's definitely high end...probably cost more than the .300 am I right?  Or maybe you got a bundle deal like I used to get at my firearm store.  Buy a markman scope...get a free 30 ought!  And why did you put spent casings in the ammo belt?  Saving the environment one shell at a time?

Don't shoot me Erik.

Re: Bought another gun!

The scope is a high end Leopuld. That gun is a Savage .300 Short Mag, and it's got a 4 oz trigger on it. Gun is single action, (with a clip of course), so it does have a bolt.

For the record, most firearms have a tigger pressure of roughly 10-20lbs. You blow on that trigger it fires, which is why it's extremely easy to be accurate with it.

I used to use it for deer hunting until I got the target trigger, because it's not safe to try to shoot that from a tree with a trigger like that.

Now I have a Mauser 8MM that I use for deer hunting, it doesn't have a scope on it, but most kills are within 30-50 yards so it doesn't matter. The Mauser is a true WWII gun that was used in the SS. Pretty bad ass history behind it, I have all the paperwork. It has since been bored out to a true .308 because it was becoming very hard to find 8MM ammo.

Re: Bought another gun!

Does the Mauser penetrate the hide efficiently?  Everyone I know who hunts deer uses a 12 gauge shotgun with a long barrel.

Re: Bought another gun!

Are you kidding? A Winchester .308 round is what snipers use, so is the .300 Mag.

The last time I shot a deer with a gun (I like to bow hunt), it rolled over about four or five times, the entrance wound was about the size of a quarter and the exit wound was big enough I could probably stick my head in it.

I like bow hunting though, for one, the season lasts a lot longer, and two, because it's a lot more pure. You really have to sit still, not move, and let the deer get really close to you.

This was my biggest, from last year. (Er, 2008, but yeah) It was killed with a bow, then had to cut it's throat. Everyone in our family has their permits, so we can each "tag" six deer. Between the four of us (youngest sister isn't old enough yet) that means we can kill 24. This year my dad and I are up to 13 all together. We keep all the meat, the doe usually have better meat than the bucks, because they're generally younger and so it's not as tough. I think we have upwards of 200lbs of deer meat in the freezer now, and we use it for almost everything. We usually grind it with 30% beef fat, and you can't even tell it's Venice. We also let them hang for a full day or two, let all the blood drain completely out. Overall it's much healthier then beef.

This particular buck was mounted fullrock

Re: Bought another gun!

You have a doe license?  Only natives (or indians or whatever you wanna call them) can hunt doe here.  There are a handful of people with buck licenses that win a doe license in the annual "lottery" but that's probably only a few hundred people if that.

Bow hunting is great, I had a re-curve italian wood bow with mods that I used to hunt rabbit and partridge with.  I'm just saying certain guns cause unneccessary suffering to deer.  I saw a large buck shot with a 22 rifle and it took about seven or eight shots until the poor thing stopped kicking.  I punched the guy in the face after the deer was dead and severed the aorta just to be sure.  I also saw one shot with a 20 gauge that took 5 minutes or more to die.  I have no doubt that your gun combined with the accuracy of the scope you end it in seconds...I was just asking.  You and I seem to be the only hunters here.

Coming sealing with me this season?

Re: Bought another gun!

Haha if you pay for the plane ride.

The thing with Bows too, is that you have to hit them in the heart, if you hit a lung they'll run for hours, maybe even days. The arrow never sticks in them either, goes right through.

It's illegal to shoot a deer with anything smaller than a .223 here. If you were a good shot, you'd have no problem killing a doe with a .22LR but the problem is, most people can't do that, then you have a bunch of wounded deer running around.

Each person here gets 1 buck permit for bow, and 1 buck for rifle, and you can also shoot 2 does with a rifle or bow, it doesn't matter. The other two have to be bow. The reason for 4 doe and 2 bucks, is because the doe around here run rampant, and by eliminating most of them (which isn't even possible), you get more bucks.

There's not one night I drive home, and on my two mile stretch of road home, don't see less than 10-15 doe. Maybe once a week I'll see a buck.

They have a lottery here for alligators, which I'd love to do, they hang out in the Arkansas River around and south of Little Rock. They only give out two permits every year and it's via lottery. I think it'd be pretty wild to kill an alligator.

I'll paypal you the plane ticket money to come sealing with me and my gf but you need to take me back to AR to hunt those gators.

Re: Bought another gun!

It's a lot different when you're going to actually eat the animal.

Don't get me wrong, we have every means to go to the store and buy meat, but overall, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to kill a deer, pay for it to be processed, and put in it our freezer. In fact, for every pound of Venice we have, we save about $2/lbs over beef.

When you feed five people every night of the year, that's a lot of money.

Re: Bought another gun!

I'm not against it or anthing. I just don't think I could do it.

But I get where you're coming from.

Re: Bought another gun!

How would you describe the taste of deer without being mixed with beef fat? I hear it is a bit gross. A word I hear thrown around is "gamey" What does "gamey" taste like?

Re: Bought another gun!

It's actually quite good.  I never mixed it with beef fat or anything, I just have it cut into steaks and they're really great fried up with onions and mushrooms with fries or mashed taters.

I like moose meat better though...it's gamey-er.

And gamey tastes kinda like meat with more flavour.  Some people don't care for it...but those people are mostly the ones who are looking for something that tastes like chicken.  Gamey flavour is basiclly all the things the deer/moose has eaten in its diet mixed with the flavour of the meat.  Some taste a little sweet, some a little metallic...it depends on the animal.

Rabbit is fantastic in a stew or made with a nice gravy or sauce.  I gnaw it right off the bone.  Mmm mmm.  And it's lean as well, nearly fat free.

Re: Bought another gun!

I didn't shoot the computers today. I'm going to save those for when Jacob comes into town. I did splatter the modems and receiver around pretty nice though.

The computers will be a lot of fun to shoot because they won't fall over as easy, and the bullets will probably bounce around inside of them quite a bit. Where as with the routers you hit them and they go flying, same with the DirecTV receiver. Computer is heavy enough though, it shouldn't move.

Re: Bought another gun!

Load it with rocks and use full metal jackets.  It will go clean through all the equipment.  Just make sure there's a stump or something on the other side.

You must have a fun life.  I wish you were my neighbor.
