Topic: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Gamespot wrote:

Halo 2 players better get their last frags in. At midnight, Microsoft announced that it is ceasing support for all original Xbox games, including digital copies of Xbox Originals that were bought for the Xbox 360. Disc-based Xbox games optimized for the Xbox 360, such as Halo 2, will lose their online modes on that date. Any offline single-player modes will still function normally, and single-player games with no online component will be unaffected.

"On April 15, we will discontinue the Xbox Live service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals," Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten said in a statement. "I want to start by saying this isn’t a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community." Currently, Xbox Live has over 23 million users.

Without going into too much detail, Whitten said the reason behind the cessation of original Xbox support was that Microsoft "need[s] to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games." Whitten said that Microsoft would be contacting players "directly impacted" by the loss of service via e-mail to discusses "more details and opportunities," but he did not go into specifics. "We view you as a partner in this process," he concluded.

Xbox Live began in 2002 on the original Xbox and was the most robust online network of the last generation of consoles. NFL Fever was the first game on the service, and online play boosted the popularity of such games as MechAssault and Project Gotham Racing 2. However, it was Halo 2 that became the most popular original Xbox title on Xbox Live. The game is still played on it and has been for over five years since its November 2004 release. The original Xbox ceased production in 2006.

Looks like if anyone wants to play Halo 2 one more time online, they'd only have a few months to do it. I haven't played Halo 2 for years, but I found it to be superior online to Halo 3 in almost every possible way. The maps maps in particular were incredible. I played Halo 3 more recently than Halo 2 but 2's maps still stick in my head while 3's maps are mostly forgotten. I must say this is sort of sad...Even though I never played anymore I knew Halo 2 was always still there in case I wanted to go back and play and for other people to enjoy.

I say sometime in the next month everyone who still has the game and Xbox Live should all get on and we'll play together.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Sounds like fun Dpark.  Does this mean that eventually all original xbox games won't be Xbox Live compatible?

One day we will look back on this, laugh nervously, and change the subject.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

I have never played any version of Halo online...ever.  Sick, huh?

I remember playing Ghost Recon and Mechassault...that's it.

You could even just read the title of the thread and know the answer to his question.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Deduk had a reading comprehension fail...

But it really is the only game I'm gonna miss. I think ending the service is sort of silly to be honest. Yes it's true that there aren't a lot of people out there that play Xbox games online anymore but we still pay for Xbox Live so I think we should be able to play them online if we want. If anything, original Xbox games should be free to play online...

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

So what do you say guys? We have until April so I say sometime over spring break should work. I may be getting on sometime soon when I'm not busy just to check it out. The graphics will look antiquated but I think they at least run it progressive scan.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

I played Halo 2 recently. The graphics looked pretty good, but the controls felt a little off. You can strafe faster than you can walk forward or backward. It's really weird. It's funny if you play the first Halo, then the second, and then the third. They really just perfected what they had each iteration.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

I always thought Halo 1 was the best game.  Maybe it was just because of the shock value since I'd never played a game like it before.  Even after all these years I find Halo 3 too busy, Halo 2 is foggy for me, but I had a blast playing the original.  I liked the levels a lot and had a lot of fun playing system link multiplayer on Blood Gorge and that ice level.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

I don't own halo 2 anymore. I need to see if I can find it.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Halo Combat Evolved had the best single player, Halo 2 had the best multiplayer IMO. I didn't really like Halo 2's single player, especially the anticlimactic ending. Overall they were all well made games but the original was just so revolutionary. I remember the  crash landing onto Halo and I left the ship and Cortana told me to hide because the covenant were looking for me.I look above me and there is an alien ship circling. At the time it was incredible.

Haha, whoops.  What's even more ridiculous is that I actually did read the whole post.  I have no idea why I didn't get that.

I still have pretty much all of my original Xbox games.  I remember having tons of fun playing Mechassault 1 and 2.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

YES the second level.  That was one of my all time favorite video game moments.  When I looked down at the grass and actually saw blades of grass and looked at rocks and actually saw bumps, it mesmerized me.  I remember being bent over edge of the couch with my back killing me and clenching my teeth, sweating, not even pausing for a piss or a cigarette.  So much fun.  I'm guessing I don't remember much of Halo 2 because of the ending (which Ameer just reminded me how unspectacular it was) and Halo 3...I don't know.  The environments weren't doing it for me at all and the enemies changed.  They also took away the ZOOM ON THE PISTOL which was my favorite waepon in Halo 1 and quickly became a throw-away in the sequels.

But yeah Halo 1's single player experience is only rivaled by Bioshock and the 2 modern warfares.  I didn't like Fallout 3 at all.  Now make fun of me for it.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Haha I remember noticing the blades of grass too! And how expansive it was. Craziest moment was when the flood burst through, so creepy. And then the library...what an annoying level.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Oh and I couldn't for the life of me get into Fallout 3. I've put over 100 hours into Oblivion, it's easily in my top 5 games of all time. I had such high hopes for Fallout 3 being from Bethesda but it just didn't do it for me. I'm thinking the time I tried to play it may have had something to do with it. Either that or the bleak post apocalyptic environment that contrasts so starkly with the beautiful setting of Cyrodil. I'll probably end up trying to play it again because I know if I got into it I'd like it.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

I don't even have a copy of Halo 2 anymore, so I could give 2 shits.

Anyways, why don't we all just play some MW2 and be happy?

The Library was the worst level in video game history.

Fallout 3 is sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get bored and broke enough to play it.

I'll play some Halo 2 with you, Dpark.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

I just purchased a 37" Toshiba 1080p LCD.

I plan on taking over a whole new lead on the HDTV front. I was playing Forza 3 on a fucking 36" Sanyo CRT, I swear to god this TV weighs 300Lbs, no shit.

I like Forza 3 and MW2.

I enjoyed Halo 2 three years ago, but it's about time to let go.

I haven't played it in over 3 years, but it's about nostalgia. Who else is into nostalgia? Oh yeah, Jasoco...help me out here!

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Ever notice how Erik just ducks the question of why he ignored someone and goes on about TVs?

It's manners, Friedland.

And Ameer I'm sure he was just jacking off.  Don't take it personally, he used to do it to me all the time.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

To answer the question.

No, I don't have halo 2.

No, I don't want to play Halo 2.

Besides the fact that the fucking topic was about Microsoft dropping Xbox Live for original Xbox and Xbox games.

I don't think when I read the topic "Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support", Who wants to play Halo 2?

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

No I saw it.

I didn't have a headset at the time.

I actually went out and bought a new 360 today, so I now have a headset. I am also going to get a new gamertag, I want to start fresh. My sister added shitloads of people, and all kinds of weird games, etc.

When I get the new gamertag I'll post it up.

You can create a silver account and get one month for free right?

http://card.mygamercard.net/nxe/javthegreat.png

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Silver account is always free. Gold membership costs either $8 a month, or you can prepay.

Silver lets you do everything you can with Gold, except play online with other people.

To play with others, you have to have Gold.

http://card.mygamercard.net/Its+Shiva+Time.png

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

No, I mean since you bought a new system if you create a silver account you get one month of gold for free.

http://card.mygamercard.net/nxe/javthegreat.png

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Oh, I didn't have that option.

But I do have tons of old 1 month free Gold trials laying around, so I'm going to use all those up before I start paying for it.

Holy crap sorry dude, I guess I'm being sentimental or maybe it's because I really liked that game and I associate it with years gone? I won't be a dipshit but you shouldn't be a douche.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

Halo 2's last hurrah with online play is going to be put on hold for me. I tried to download the maps to let me play on matchmaking and was unable to. I checked online and it turns out that they were taken off the server a couple of days ago. Microsoft decide to essentially pull the plug on the game while the servers are still going to be running for another couple of months...People are complaining so hopefully they will put the maps back up to allow people to play one last time. I'm sure if Bungie has something to say about it the maps will go back up temporarily.

Re: Xbox Live dropping original Xbox game support

The maps were put back up so I would recommend to anyone who still has Halo 2 to download them even if you never plan on playing because once they're gone, they're gone. I'm downloading them now Clark, and sometime soon I think we should arrange to play.
